Variety within the AAT Environment

Hi everyone!

This week, it occurred to me that many people are a little biased in their thinking when it comes to animal-assisted therapy. What I mean by this is that many people feel as though only dogs or cats are involved in this type of therapy. It is true that dogs and cats are used most often, with dogs being the most common transitional object in the patient’s environment, however it is not only limited to these two groups! Dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs, and many other animals have healing powers over the human condition. As a matter of fact, this year Hand in Paw has a guinea pig that will be a therapy animal. How exciting! Below is a short video that illustrates the wide variety of animals utilized in animal-assisted therapy to improve patient outcomes.
